Dragon Slippers by Jessica Day George is a magical fantasy novel about a brave young girl named Creel, who befriends dragons, defies expectations, and discovers her own strength and creativity. What begins as a quest to save her family quickly becomes a journey of courage, friendship, and transformation. With clever problem-solving, compassion, and a few unexpected allies, Creel proves that even an ordinary girl can change the course of kingdoms.

This literature-based unit invites students ages 8–14 to dive deep into the world of Dragon Slippers while exploring language arts, writing, history, science, herbalism, and philosophy.

  • Develop writing skills in narrative, expository, descriptive, journalistic, and reflective forms using story-based prompts.
  • Study the science of alchemy—its history, modern connections to chemistry, and the theme of transformation.
  • Discover the magic of herbs through hands-on “alchemy” projects like herbal teas, natural dyes, and potion-making journals.
  • Practice “Affirmation Alchemy” by exploring the science of positive thinking and how words transform the mind and body.
